LOOKING AHEAD: SKYSCRAPERS OF 2017 | SKYSAVER RESCUE BACKPACKS

As 2016 comes to a close, we look ahead to next year. While 2016 saw the completion of Shanghai Tower, the second tallest building in the world, 2017 will see the completion of even more architectural marvels. While none will reach the same stature, 2017 remains a year to look forward to for skyscraper enthusiasts. Many of the tallest skyscrapers being completed this year are located in China, as can be expected. What is the tallest building set to be completed next year? How will that compare with Shanghai Tower? With nearly 20 skyscrapers over 300 meters set to be completed next year, it’s definitely not going to be a slow one when it comes to architecture.

Obviously, this one is located in China (as many of the new megatall skyscrapers being built these days are), specifically Tianjin. It will be nearly 600 meters when complete (1,959 feet), and was topped out in late 2015. It will house a hotel, residential space, and commercial offices. It will contain 117 storeys, as well as 4,000,000 square feet of floor area. Initially, the top of the tower was meant to be in a fin-like shape. It has since been replaced by a diamond. This tower’s construction began in 2008 and is set to surpass Shanghai World Financial Center, becoming the second tallest building in the country, after Shanghai Tower. It will be the sixth tallest building in the world, giving China four out of the top ten tallest buildings.

Hengqin Headquarters (Tower 2)

Another skyscraper being built in China, this one is located in Guangdong. It will be a bit smaller than Goldin Finance 117, standing at “only” 490 meters (1,607 feet). Construction began nearly 4 years ago and is set to be completed in the coming year. It will have 106 storeys.

Chongqing International Trade and Commerce Center

Yet another skyscraper being completed in China next year, this one will stand at 468 meters (1,535 feet) and 100 storeys. It will become the tallest building in Chongqing. Construction began in 2012.

Abu Dhabi Plaza

This one is a bit different, being located in Astana, Kazakhstan. This project consists of several towers of varying heights, however, the tallest will be 382 meters (1,253 feet) and 88 storeys. It will be the tallest building in Central Asia. It has a cost of about $1.1 billion and consist of a hotel, residential space, office space, and shopping space. It will be 75 storeys and will easily become the tallest building in Kazakhstan.

Gate of Taipei

This supertall skyscraper will be located in Taipei, Taiwan. It will consist of two skyscrapers, one being 322 meters (1,057 feet) and one being 243 meters (797 feet). The taller one will have 76 storeys, while the shorter one will have 56 storeys. It has an estimated cost of about $414 million and will be the second tallest building in Taipei and the third tallest building in Taiwan.

Palais Royale

Coming in at an estimated cost of about $450 million, Palais Royale is located in Mumbai, India. It will be a luxury building, with a movie theater, spa, cricket pitch, swimming pools, badminton court, and more. It will stand at approximately 320 meters (1,050 feet) and contain 88 storeys of 120 apartments. Construction began in 2008 and is set to be completed in the fall of next year.
