How Hot Can Fire Get?

Everyone knows that fire is hot, but how hot can it actually get? Not everyone realizes that there are different temperatures for fire depending on the fuel, as well as the oxidizer type. There’s a huge difference in temperature between a simple flame burning on a candle and the fire burning from a propane torch. So, what are the degrees of variation between different kinds of fire?

Check out the following examples of how temperature can vary: The temperature of a candle burns between 600 and 1,400 Celsius or 1,112 and 2,552 Fahrenheit. A blow torch burns at about 1,600 Celsius or 2,900 Fahrenheit while a propane torch burns at about 1,977 Celsius or 3,590 Fahrenheit.

But what about a house fire or a high rise fire? How hot does that fire get? Generally, high rise fires burn at about 593 Celsius or 1,100 Fahrenheit. This is not hot enough to destroy metals or earthly-made substances but it is hot enough that these fires cause $8.6 billion dollars in property damage according to FEMA. Generally, jewlery, silver coins, tools, silverware, filing cabinets, cookware, some appliances, barbeque grills, firesafes, and stone tables can still be found intact after house fires and apartment fires. These items would need to take in a lot more heat in order to be affected.

These fires still cause thousands of casualties each year, and you should do anything and everything you can to make your home safe. This includes making sure you have a working fire extinguisher, as well as smoke detectors installed in the bedrooms and kitchen.
